About our church

A small church with a wide-open door

We won't pretend to be something we're not. First Christian Church is a small congregation — and we think that's one of the best things about us. Here, you're a person, not a number, and there's always room at the table.

Who we are

First Christian Church is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), gathering for worship just one block off Main Street in Wagoner, Oklahoma. We're a mix of longtime residents and newer neighbors — retired educators, healthcare workers, folks from ranching and farming families, lake-area residents, and people who simply wandered in one Sunday and decided to stay.

We're not a big church, and we're not trying to be. What we offer instead is something that can be hard to find: a place where people actually know your name, notice when you're missing, and show up when life gets hard.

What matters to us

A few things sit at the center of our life together — not as rules to clear, but as the shape of who we are.

Small-church warmth

We're the kind of place where you can sit by someone new and leave having made a friend. Hospitality isn't a program here — it's just how we treat each other.

Weekly Communion

Every Sunday we gather at the Lord's Table to share bread and cup. It's the heart of our worship and a weekly reminder that God's welcome is bigger than any of us.

Thoughtful faith

We take Scripture seriously and questions seriously, too. Doubt isn't a problem to be hidden; it's often where honest faith begins. You can bring your whole mind to church here.

A local presence

This is our town. We care about Wagoner's schools, its families, and its future, and we try to be a quiet, steady help to our neighbors however we can.

Our denomination

Part of the Disciples of Christ

We belong to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a mainline Protestant denomination that began on the American frontier with a simple hope: that Christians of every background could come together around Jesus and his table. Disciples describe themselves as “a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world,” welcoming all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us.

That heritage shapes us. It's why we lead with welcome rather than fine print, why we trust ordinary people to read and wrestle with Scripture, and why we'd rather build bridges than draw lines.

Come see for yourself

The best way to get to know a church is to walk in the door. We'd be glad to meet you this Sunday.
